How to Make a Split HST (or 3-part QST)

making the blocks

Assemble:

  • (1) 4″ HSTs
  • (1) 4″ Peach squares

Match a 4″ HST block with a Peach 4″ square, right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line on the back the HST, bisecting the seam. Sew 1/4″ away from each side of that line. Cut on the line and press the seam open.

Square up this block to 3-1/2″. You will make (2) Split HST blocks.

Note that the two Split HST blocks will be mirror images of each other.

Sew these two together to make a Crocus block, as used in the Key West pattern, or use it in a Chain Link block.
